My obsession began not quite a year ago. I had wanted to learn to
spin for a while when I came across the cutest baby alpaca, he was so
soft. I set about finding a spinning group in my area and attended a
spinning meeting. The women there were really wonderful and taught me
how to learn to spin, provided me with a wheel and some fleece to begin
with. I had a rather large stash of merino tops and silk from felting. I
wanted to spin textured interesting yarns but everything that came off
my wheel was relatively fine and thin and even right from the start
(after I realized you didn't need to break all the time) . More control
needed. I hit the internet watched videos practiced. One of the ladies
from the spin group gave me some kid mohair and I was obsessed. I love
spinning mohair. Then I bought more mohair fleece from a farmer in the
spin group and washed it and spun, but a little goes a long way. Next I
looked for a second hand drum carder, obsession in full flight and
knowing I would have to leave it all behind and go to Switzerland but
they have sheep and goats there so no problem. A second hand wheel, an
Ashford Traveler came up, a hand made heavy duty drum carder appeared
and I had little time to use them along with a cria fleece, so many
things to play with so many things to pack into storage.
